What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a form of treatment that views the body as a whole. It focuses on the interconnectedness of the musculoskeletal system, the nervous system, and overall well-being. Chiropractic care aims to ensure that all parts of the body function optimally and interact with each other. The result of this is improved body function and the prevention or alleviation of complaints. The primary focus of a chiropractor is optimizing the function of the musculoskeletal system. Attention is also given to the nervous system, as it plays a significant role in how the body functions. Since the neck and spine are key areas influencing body function, they are often the focus during treatment.

However, this does not mean you should only visit a chiropractor for back or neck issues. On the contrary, the nerves running through the spine and neck control the muscles throughout the rest of the body. Pain or discomfort in areas such as the hip, ankle, or wrist can be caused by a blockage in the spine. In such cases, manipulation of the spinal blockage can relieve symptoms that manifest elsewhere in the body. Sometimes, a complaint is localized, such as knee pain caused by a blockage in the knee itself. Chiropractic is also highly suitable for treating these localized issues.

You can also visit a chiropractor even if you are not experiencing any complaints. Often, there are small disturbances that have not yet led to symptoms but still prevent the body from functioning at its best. A chiropractic treatment is highly effective in improving overall well-being and performance, as well as preventing future complaints.

Different treatment forms

The chiropractor first conducts a thorough examination to determine where disturbances are present in the body. Based on this, the treatment plan is established. This treatment plan is always fully tailored to the individual and usually consists of a combination of different treatment methods that complement each other. The following treatment methods may be applied:

This involves manipulating the joints to restore or improve mobility and functionality. This is also commonly known as “cracking”.
This is a milder form of manipulation where specific bending and stretching movements are used to activate the joint and improve mobility.
In this treatment, the soft tissue is addressed. The focus is on mobilizing and relaxing the muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
In this procedure, a very thin needle is used to stimulate a trigger point in the muscle. A trigger point is also known as a “knot in the muscle.” The stimulation causes the muscle to contract first and then relax.
These are exercises tailored to the individual to improve specific mobility, flexibility, and/or strength.
Special kinesio tape is applied to the body to provide support and stability to the joints and muscles.
This may include advice on nutrition, exercise, and sleep. Adjustments in these areas can contribute to better body function and recovery.
